Normal & Common Aging (1 hour)

This CE workshop differentiates normal, age-related changes from common conditions in aging that can affect the way the individual acts and interacts in the environment. Identification of symptoms/behaviors that we, as professionals, can do something about compared to the symptoms of dementia is also explored.

The course utilizes lecture, role-playing techniques, and engaging activities to produce a learning experience, which facilitates information retention.

After completing this course:
1) Participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the 5 normal and abnormal senses.
2) Participants will be able to differentiate symptoms/behaviors that are common due to sensory changes and those related to dementia.
3) Participants will be able to identify ways to compensate for sensory changes through adaptations in the environment.

This course is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards – ASWB NJ CE Course Approval Program Provider #55 Course #1698 from xx/xx/2018 to xx/xx/20xx. Social workers will receive the following type and number of credit(s):   General Social Work Practice 1

The course is approved for 1 credit hour by NEMSD and is structured for nurses, social workers and case managers at all levels of their professional career.

Kerry C. Mills is a MPA with a Specialization in Health Administration from Long Island University and a BS in International Marketing from Arizona State University. She is the author of two books relative to dementia care and has held high-level management positions in dementia-exclusive organizations serving people with cognitive impairment. Amy E. Matthews holds a BA in Human Development from Mount Vernon College, Washington DC, and is a recognized expert in the field of dementia care, completing 13-years of service with the Greater New Jersey Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association which culminated with her role as Associate Director of Education and Training. She served as Executive Director of one of Arden Courts’ Alzheimer’s-exclusive communities with 56 cognitively impaired residents. Click here to learn more about Amy.

There is no charge for this workshop, but is by invitation only at the discretion of the organization hosting the course at their designated location and time schedule.
